We managed a short walk after Christmas - before the awful wind and rain that we have now, set in. Staple Tor is a favourite, as it is close to home and it is a very short, easy walk. It takes you up to 420 metres above sea level and you can see the coast from the top.

The ponies were already tucked into the rocks at the top, sheltering from the cold winds. It was as if they had been stabled there.

Hello, these pones are hill ponies and not the native Dartmoor ponies (which are being carefully bred to keep their pure breeding). All the ponies are owned but run wild on the moor. They get rounded up twice a year and many of them are sold. Their main use is to keep the scrub clear. Lower down, near the car parks, the ponies have learned that humans mean food and will come up to take sandwiches but this encourages them to come near the roads - so it is not good practice to feed the ponies - however adorable they are!
